چکیده

We have studied the ZrO2~111!/Ni~111! interface using the ultrasoft pseudopotential formalism within density functional theory. We find that ZrO2(111) adheres relatively strongly at the monolayer level but thicker ceramic films interact weakly with the Ni-substrate. We argue that the cohesion changes character from dominantly image charge interactions for thick ceramic films to more covalent for monolayer ZrO2(111) films. We provide an analysis of energetic, structural and electronic aspects of the ZrO2/Ni interface as a function of the thickness of the oxide layer. We also address the role of the exchange-correlation density functional parameterization for modeling the oxide and metal/oxide interface and discuss the sensitivity of the supercell approximation for metal/oxide interface properties. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1352079#

Metal Adatoms and Clusters on Ultrathin Zirconia Films

Nucleation and growth of transition metals on zirconia has been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Since STM requires electrical conductivity, ultrathin ZrO2 films grown by oxidation of Pt3Zr(0001) and Pd3Zr(0001) were used as model systems. DFT studies were performed for single metal adatoms on supported ZrO2 films as well as the (1̅...

First-principles investigation of a monolayer of C60 on h-BN/Ni„111..

The geometric and electronic structures of a monolayer of C60 on a h-BN monolayer-covered Ni 111 surface are studied by first-principles calculations. The interaction between ions and electrons is described by the projector-augmented plane-wave method. The most stable structure of the h-BN/Ni 111 surface is found to be N on the top and B on the fcc site of Ni 111 . Upon adsorption, the structur...

Stable nontrivial Z2 topology in ultrathin Bi (111) films: a first-principles study.

Recently, there have been intense efforts in searching for new topological insulator materials. Based on first-principles calculations, we find that all the ultrathin Bi (111) films are characterized by a nontrivial Z(2) number independent of the film thickness, without the odd-even oscillation of topological triviality as commonly perceived. The stable nontrivial Z(2) topology is retained by t...

FIRST PRINCIPLES TOTAL ENERGY STUDY OF THE MORPHOLOGICAL INSTABILITY OF Mo(111) INDUCED BY ULTRATHIN FILMS OF Rh

By using first principles total energy calculations, the surface energies of (100), (110), (111) and (211) surfaces of Mo before and after adsorbing ultrathin films of Rh have been presented. The results show that in the case of clean Mo surfaces Mo(111) is stable against faceting to Mo(211), Mo(110) and Mo(100), while after adsorbing one physical monolayer of Rh, the surface energies of all th...

Surface lattice vibration and electron–phonon interaction in Pb(111) ultrathin superconducting films from first principles: both with and without Si substrate

The lattice vibration and electron–phonon (EP) coupling of three types of Pb ultrathin films were calculated from first principles. For free-standing films, our calculations showed that softening and stiffening of the surface phonons coexist. The obtained EP coupling λ and the superconducting transition temperature TC are smaller than their bulk values. For (1× 1)-Pb/Si(111) films, the obtained...
